Testimonies of the Book of Mormon – Eldred

Yesterday I posted on my blog about a number of testimonies my family members had written while I was a missionary in France.  These testimonies were given to me, I translated them into French, hand-wrote them in the front of a copy of the Book of Mormon (Le Livre de Mormon), and gave them to people I contacted.

Continuing with these testimonies, today I share the testimony of my uncle Eldred Bills.

The Book of Mormon is another witness that Jesus Christ is the son of God, that he is resurrected, and that he is alive today.

He leads the affairs of the Church, His Church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, through a living prophet.

Our Heavenly Father loves us, His children, and sent us here on earth with a purpose and a way to find the way back.

The abundance of his gospel is contained in the pages of this book.

I am sure of the truth of these things. You can know the truth of this book too, if you will do what the prophet Moroni said in Moroni Chapter 10, verses 3 to 5.

With sincere study and prayer, you will know the truth of these things and that God the Father and Jesus Christ His son live and love you.

Eldred Bills (mon oncle)

I have noted on the paper, that I gave this copy of the Book of Mormon to a man of about 60 years of age. I had written “elderly” but now that I’m 48, 60 years old doesn’t seem elderly, so I’ll just omit that using my author’s discretion.

As a missionary we would always read those verses (Moroni 10:35- with the person whom we were teaching. It is a promise as my Uncle Eldred says, from an ancient prophet named Moroni, that if you will read the Book of Mormon, and ask God if the things you are reading are true, God will answer your prayer and confirm the veracity of the Book. I have tried to think of myself in Moroni’s shoes. He was writing this hundreds of years ago for a people he would never know in person. He knew of the importance of the writings and his direction from God of what to write. Now this is the end of it. He is making his final plea, with everything he can muster through the written language,  “exhorting” us to read the words, and then to ask God in prayer if they be true. His promise is that the Holy Ghost will testify that it is the word of God.

3 Behold, I would exhort you that when ye shall read these things, if it be wisdom in God that ye should read them, that ye would remember how merciful the Lord hath been unto the children of men, from the creation of Adam even down until the time that ye shall receive these things, and ponder it in your hearts.

4 And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.

5 And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things

In the very last verse in the Book of Mormon, he says, “And now I bid unto all, farewell. I soon go to rest in the paradise of God, until my spirit and body shall again reunite, and I am brought forth triumphant through the air, to meet you before the pleasing bar of the great Jehovah, the Eternal Judge of both quick and dead. Amen.”
